Part of the now familiar chain of brew pubs to be found across the South of England, this is the Southsea counterpart to the older venue in Central Portsmouth. As with its sister site, this is a pub converted venue, inhabiting the former White Horse, and I thought the place really benefitted from this, retaining a pub-feel despite the modernised interior and prominent brew-plant. You enter via a rather large front patio which boasts a great many picnic benches as well as benches in beach-hut style booths and there is a good deal of greenery out here to make it feel like a proper garden. The main bar area is a bare boarded, open-plan room which has been broken up by a couple of brick pillars. Some lounge seating is available to the front right, under a modern pub mirror that has been treated to make it look much older. Elsewhere, high tables and stools comprise the majority of the seating options, with some tables boasting display cases under their tops, each with displays of different hop varieties in them, whilst a more comprehensive hop and malt display can be found over on the wall to the left. The bar runs along the rear wall and has a nice traditional counter that’s been given a more modern lick of paint, whilst the bar back has old-fashioned looking signage counterpointed by a beer board that seemingly has taken its inspiration from a game a Scrabble. Some banquette booths under a collection of board games along the left-hand wall, round out the seating options in this room and there is a walkway here that will take you past the brewery equipment and on into a large side-room. This is a split-level space with a good mix of seating including tub chairs and button backed banquettes, whilst a table in the centre of the room appeared to have some sort of feature built into it, with a large extractor hood overhead. Décor here was fairly restrained, with several old portraits and the like on show whilst a poppy soundtrack played away quietly in the background.
Sadly, only two of their beers were available on handpull – Great Escape and Langtry’s – whilst two more were ‘Coming Soon’. A friendly barman served me a decent enough half of the Langtry’s which was obtained after a period stood in a long, winding queue which snaked its way through the pub, when it might better have spread itself along the length of the bar.
I was a bit disappointed by the beer choice in here but appreciate we may have caught the place on a bad day. Aside from that, I quite liked the way this pub has been converted into part of the chain and enjoyed drinking in the sun on their pleasant patio. There are plenty of good pubs around this part of town and whilst this one doesn’t really challenge for top spot, it certainly merits a look in passing or inclusion on a crawl.

I visited the Brewhouse Southsea on a recent Friday afternoon not long after visiting the much smaller Brewhouse in Portsmouth. The major draw of this place seems to be the large beer garden out the front that houses lots of picnic tables that were populated by the young movers and shakers of the area. Along the right-hand side of the garden are four beach huts that can be booked online. The bar, located at the rear of the beer garden, has a counter that runs along the back wall. I counted four hand pumps, two of which were off, and a large craft keg range. I visited as part of a Pubs Galore crawl so we arrived en masse and had to form an orderly queue to the bar. It gave us lots of time to discuss if the décor which resembles an American diner. To the left of the bar area is a separate restaurant which I didn’t visit. In between the bar and the restaurant is the in-house Cockleshell Brewery, which thankfully wasn’t brewing during my visit (I hate the smell).
This is certainly a nice spot for a few beers on a warm and sunny day, but I wouldn’t want to stay too long during inclement weather as the bar area is not very comfortable or interesting.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Brewhouse & Kitchen

The main building looks like a villa, with the gateway into the spacious front patio beer garden reinforcing that initial impression. Once inside, the bar is opposite the entrance with the small brew kit off to the left. Disappointingly, just two Brewhouse & Kitchen beers from the four handpumps: Langtry's (£1.70, half) and Great Escape, but you can do a lot worse than whiling away some time sitting outside in the sunshine here.

Establishment for the middle class Millennial and yummy mummy types. Impressive entrance via a flora covered arch to a large garden with the pub building beyond. Tidy and modern inside with a fairly comfy and traditional feel. The main bar greets you as you enter, with an extension off left which also houses the brewery kit. Four cask lines but only two were actually on; my Great Escape clocked in a faintly silly £2.40 given it is brewed on the premises (NBSS 2.5 in the drinking). The pump taps in bogs are of amusement. Overall, it's fair – I doubt I’d feel overly motivated to re-acquaint with it next time I’m in town.

I can totally understand why the Brew House and Kitchen PubCo had added this one to their ever-growing portfolio as it ticks all the attraction boxes for their target millennial audience.
A clean modern pub interior with a kitchen providing menu options that would be more closely associated with masterchef ( I give you Blistered Padron peppers with sea salt, Cod en Papillote e.t.c.), artisan gins and craft beers brewed on site, a large fantastic sun trap outside area with a collection of individual beach huts that can be privately reserved, and a great location looking out onto the start of Southsea common.
And it certainly seemed to be working when we walked past on a couple of occasions on the gloriously sunny Saturday after our PuG crawl when the outside space was jam packed to overflowing. So whereas a CAMRA card carrying old duffer like me would (and did ) complain on the Friday of our visit that only two of their ales were available , it didn’t seem to be a cause for concern for the Millennial crowd packing the place out a day later.
And actually, if we hadn’t had been on a mission, I would have happily sneaked back into this one to do my best lizard in the sun impression and try pretending I was 30 years younger by spending an hour to consume a half of 5.4% Inspiring Bell stout. Is it apocalyptic to admit that ?

The second Brewhouse of the day and it’s clear that they follow a similar formula, with a stripped out look, brew kit and young crowd; the average age doubled on our group’s arrival. Unlike the sister outlet, there’s no smell of malt, just Lynx from the students. It’s a bit featureless, but there’s a substantial beer patio for an alfresco pint looking out across Southsea Common to the sea and European Union beyond (Boo![ ]/Hurrah![ ] tick as appropriate).
This would seem to be more of a craft keg rather than real ale venue. There were only four pumps and as with the sister pub, two were off. I don’t know what I ordered but it was pleasant enough, though at £2.40 for a half, easily the most expensive drink of the day.
Only really worth a visit for the suntrap out front.

A decent spot if you fancy an alfresco pint when the weather is good as it was on the PUG tour, the pub itself is modern and rather featureless, brewing kit aside. Beers were as Bucking Fastard describes below with the Great Escape being Ok.

Until very recently The White Horse, this substantial pub is now part of the Brewhouse & Kitchen chain. There is a huge beer garden leading to the entrance and this was proving a great draw on a sunny afternoon. There are some small painted garden sheds here if you need some shade. The first room is square with supporting columns and a bar at the rear serving the output from the brewing kit from 4 handpumps and 4 keg taps.Sadly only two ales available on my trip Great Escape (acceptable) and Langtry with two other clips reversed.
Keep winding around the interior to see the coppers and brewing kit, then further seating some of which is in a conservatory.
Shame about the limited ale options, worth including on a crawl but well short of the excellent Hole in the Wall and Barley Mow if you find yourself in Southsea.

Slightly surprising pub tucked away at the back of Southsea Common. The old house contains a reasonable bar, including a bar billiards table, with extensive restaurant and carvery areas off o the side and a large beer garden in front. Despite the emphasis on food, drinkers are well catered for with some interesting ales (Cask Marque listed). Possibly worth avoiding at busy times like Sunday lunch, but very pleasant when quiet.
