Old Boots left this review about The Sir Walter Tyrell

Named after the man who “accidentality” shot King William II aka William Rufus, allegedly with a ricocheting arrow, it’s a famous forest pub near the Rufus Stone marking the spot of the killing. A bit of a tourist spot very near the incredibly busy and fast A31 dual carriageway. A 1930s looking weather boarded building, although made over at various times a few original bits remain. It’s long and split down the middle by the servery with the panelled counter having seating to either side and at both ends. One part behind the servery houses a pool table. Traditional mock half timber walls, part of interior has a thatched roof. There’s a small collection of rural artifacts dotted about as decor. Unlike some Greene King pubs it only has their cask beers, Abbot (ok), boys bitter IPA and the girly Peach Cooler thing. Two low trio T-bars have a limited cider and latin lager choice. Another but unused hand pull lurks at one end of the counter. Friendly owners with refreshingly traditional views on running pubs, it is also very dog friendly and has a rack of dog treats outlined in a dog menu from Sir Woofchester’s - groan. Outdoor seating is available at the front and rear and a play area with equipment to one side. There’s a zebra in the front window and a horse drawn trap outside (horse not included).
