E TA left this review about The Royal Oak
A thatched former royal hunting lodge which dates back to the 17th Century, now a country pub which offers food and drink to locals and visitors to the New Forest. The pub is next to a quiet road through the Forest, with an open area the other side which means there is a pleasant view at the front. Consequently there are plenty of seats and tables there from which to enjoy the view while dining and drinking al fresco. There is a more peaceful, more sheltered leafy garden at the back which is also a very enjoyable place to spend time. Inside, it’s been substantially renovated while retaining some character. Inside, there are three main bar areas, two carpeted at the front, and a third down a step at the rear, the latter with a laminate floor. Some exposed timbers remain, many painted to match the ceiling, though and most of the exposed brickwork looks newish. Relaxing jazz and soft rock music helped provide a chilled atmosphere. There was a coven of barmaids, all pleasant and helpful, while a barman seemed t be supervising, rather than assisting them. The majority of the customers seemed to be reasonably mature and sensible, while a group of lycra-clad cyclists who arrived were kept under control. The plethora of dogs present were rather better behaved, possibly incentivised with treats or an over-priced dog meal from the bar. Food was expensive, more bistro than pub grub, but it was locally sourced and freshly cooked. Ales on were Harvey’s Sussex Bitter, Downton Quadhop and one from Otter, while the keg range consisted of Alpacalypse, Moretti, Madri, Orchard Pig Reveller, Aspall’s Cider and Guinness. Classic cocktails were also offered to those so inclined. There were a few locals in, and the local cadre is enhanced by their running a monthly pub quiz. I quite liked it here, even though it didn’t have an entirely traditional pub feel. I’m sure I’ll be back though as it’s a convenient stop for me, and their beer makes it worthwhile.
