A wonderfully atmospheric thatched village pub which offers food and good ale. The building, which is in a narrow street where parking is problematic, dates from the 17th Century and was previously a farmhouse, before the village encroached on the area in Victorian times. An entrance at one side of the building leads to a courtyard and lawned garden, the latter has a children's play area but it's not too obtrusive. Inside there are two small bars and a dining room, all showing flag floors, exposed beams and traditional brick fireplaces with woodburners. There is a skittle alley which can be hired as a function room. Food is freshly cooked, traditional pub food but is pricey. Baguettes and specials are better value for money. There is a mixed wine list – mostly plonk, but there are one or two gems on the list. Two ales, Otter and Ringwood Best, plus Thatcher's Gold on handpumps, the beers were very well kept and most enjoyable. A really welcoming pub, well worth making the effort to find.
