A traditional drinkers pub which to external appearances looks like an ordinary house. The room to the right is for games, overspill and special occasions. The action is in the room to the left, where six hand pumps adorn the bar. There's one cider and there were four beers available at the time of my visit: Swan Arm Breaker 6%, Three Tuns Stout, Hobsons Dark Mild and Old Prickly, a beer whose sale benefits the British Hedgehog Preservation Society which is based seven miles from Hobsons Brewery. I went for the mild and the 6%er to finish the evening off in style. I was staying at the YHA just along the road and this pub is a major incentive in my forthcoming revisit.
There were only a few people in, all the rest being lifelong Kingtonians, as far as I could make out, apart from a returning daughter of the town who, having spent most of here life elsewhere was given a potted history of everyone her mother would have known at school. Given the size of the room, everyone was involved in the conversation: a bit like a micropub but with just a few years more under its belt. I'll be back.

Best pub in town, despite being relatively far from the centre. Three decent ciders on tap. Friendly crowd. Pub quoits. Unaltered interior - on the CAMRA heritage interiors list. Two small rooms. Recently branched out into food, selected evenings. Recommended
