This was a destination pub when I lived in Lancaster 40 years ago, not so much for its beer (which was Mitchells of Lancaster) but for its old world charm and the fact that beer was brought up from the cellar rather than delivered through a hand pump. It's still a delightful old village local looking for a village, but now fully equipped with hand pumps. Mitchells having long since ceased brewing, these were serving modern pale bitters: Black Sheep Best, Oakham JHB and York Guzzler - I'd like to see Thwaites Lancaster Bomber on here, probably the nearest to Mitchells Bitter that you can find now in this part of the country. In a rebellious mood, I went for the keg Tetleys Dark Mild, which at least kept me below the drink/driving limit. This is a friendly pub with a very welcome open fire and a large car park, and still well worth the effort of seeking out.
