Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Monarch
Once a side-street pub but now on a busier road following changes to the surrounding network. Anyway, even more basic inside than I was expecting, although also tidier since it has been given a modest refurbishment. Sadly, nothing doing o the three handpumps, and even the John Smith's was off (along with several other standard lagers), so a quick Guinness (£2.20, half) before moving on.

A Victorian back street local which has, through the consequences of Gillingham's one-way system, become a roadside pub. Previously owned by Shepherd and Neame, it was sold off for re-development but has been rescued and is now a freehouse. The inside has been substantially renovated, a good thing given that it was in a very poor state through years of neglect by previous owners and abuse from some of the locals. Carpets overlay the original wooden flooring, while the 3 bars have been knocked through to form a single ?-shaped room with a public drinking area at one end and a games area with pool table and dartboard at the other. Entertainment is laid on in the form of karaoke, live music and BT Sport, and there is a gaming machine in the main bar area. There is a small terraced garden at the side, screened from public view by a wall. Three handpumps on the bar, two ales on. The ales were Bob and Adnams Ghost Ship, both in good condition, and the beer now attracts visits from Medway CAMRA. A traditional pub rescued from ruin and now very much worth a visit if in Gillingham, especially given its proximity to a couple of other good ale houses.

First opened in 1869, named after HMS Monarch, an historic warship built in nearby Chatham Dockyard. Shepherd and Neame failed to find a buyer, so planning permission has been requested to convert it to flats.

I’ve past this pub several times at different points of the day and evening and it has been closed. I’m not sure if it is closed down though as many of the pubs in Gillingham seem to think it is 1970.
