Not far removed from its Goose days, with the inevitable grey paint on the woodwork. Mini TVs at all the tables. Karaoke on the go at 6.30pm on a Wednesday evening. Amazingly there were two casks, Doom Bar and Abbot, the latter of which was pretty thin gruel (NBSS 1.5) and I had to rouse the elderly barmaid from her chair in order to get served. Keeps weird opening hours with the punters seemingly schlepping between here, Hogarths, Spencers and the Tavern in a doom loop. 4.5

[Reviewed as The Goose] A couple of OK ales on (I had Bass). The interior is in pretty good shape given its customer base; a collection of alcoholics and shady characters hanging round which didn't make the place seem terribly welcoming during the lunchtime I was in. Rated 4

The Friary is a large corner pub with booths under the windows of the two exterior walls and mix of seating along the centre faced by the bar counter on the rear wall. Televisions are found throughout, including on the wall in each booth. The bar supports six hand pumps, Marston’s 61 Deep, St Austell’s Proper Job and Wychwood’s Hobgoblin Ruby were all coming soon, which left GK Abbot Ale, Sharp’s Doom Bar and Black Sheep’s Finisher EPA as the cask options. Standard keg and Peroni were also available, as was pub grub with the burgers coming in at around £10.
My recent midweek visit fell in the transition between live football finishing and a Pink concert starting. I found it a bit odd that they would put a Pink concert on at 10pm. If it was a bid to get rid of the massive hoard of pissheads that had amassed it failed. This is a run-of-the-mill sports centric city centre boozer that is not worth crossing the road for.

Large pub with the bar to the rear. Two weak real ales and the rest keg. Loads of TVs on the walls
