Favourite in Grasmere - got everything. Great food, beer, entertainment at weekends, the odd wedding, beer garden.
On this visit, it was a wonderful Coniston Old Man Ale at £3.70. Average for these parts.

There is a Camra members discount of 5% on real ales. I only found this out by picking up a copy of the local newsletter, Lakes and Ale - the discount is not advertised anywhere in the pub. When challenged, the bar manager said "we don't shout about it". I came back, "at only 5% you've nothing much to shout about", and we left it at that. There's always a good variety of well-kept beers on here, in my experience, and that should be enough to attract the real ale crowd.

This bar has been Good Beer Guide listed since 2007, and you can see why when confronted with an array of eight hand pumps serving a cider and seven mostly local ales. The stone-flagged floor and severely rectangular room with chunky pine tables somehow combine to give an unpubby feel, but it has this in common with most, if not all, of the pubs in Grasmere.
Having said that, the frequent pub-of-the-year awards and the myriad pump clips displayed around the walls testify to the dedication to real ale, which can only be for the good. If you only visit one pub in Grasmere, it's got to be this one.
The above was from 17th January 2012.
A more recent visit found 10 hand pumps now, with two ciders and eight ales even in midwinter. If staying at Ambleside this is the place to come for real ales if you've got wheels. Doing it by public transport with a stop at the Badger in Rydal is a more challenging expedition but well worth the effort.

Good attempt at creating a pub behind a medium-sized hotel in touristy village. One large room, with bar at end, and eating area adjoining, plus extensive outdoor areas. A mixture of local ales and far-flung guests makes this worth drinking at. Holds its own beer festival in September.
