A large neighbourhood pub, recently given a major refurbishment by Greene King (as part of their 'Hive' brand) using decor and furnishings straight out of their latest design catalogue so all very smart, quite inoffensive and slightly tedious. It does retain a games area with pool and darts (the latter actually being played too) and there is a smattering of TV screens round the place. Outside sees a tabled area across the frontage. Cask ales were a couple from GK (Old Speckled Hen and Rocking Rudolph) plus, presumably in deference to the name, a guest from Ainsty with a very drinkable Citra.

Now run by Greene King it’s a prominent large, corner pub on the main road into York from the West. Roughly a V shape it has a range of seating areas round the V, the apex being a raised area. Fairly bland cream decor with a few corporate posters although it retains some lincrusta or anaglypta on the lower walls. The L shaped counter sits on the back wall, various groups of keg solos plus two pulls both of which were covered by upturned glasses on my Friday lunchtime visit. There’s a profusion of screens and machines and a pool table at the back behind the servery. Fairly empty on my visit, the first of one.
