In the heart of the tiny hamlet of Starbotton, you can't miss this pub if you're passing along the only road through this part of Upper Wharfedale. The hard to read inscription above the door dates it to the mid-19th century, and it's the only white-painted building in the village, making it doubly hard to miss. There are a few bench tables on the patio to the front, separated from the road by a stone wall, with a bus stop at the corner.
Inside there's less room than you might imagine, with a tiny bar along the back wall. The first room is fairly plain, with white painted walls and a few pictures, with a stone fireplace round the corner to the right. A smaller room further to the right has exposed stone walls and is set up for dining, though there's only room for very few and very small tables.
On the bar are four hand pumps, but just the two beers, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Black Sheep Best Bitter, were available when we were here. It's been a while since my previous visit, when I remember the food was pretty good, but I didn't eat on this occasion. This is a lovely part of Yorkshire and the pub does not detract from the experience. Well worth a visit.
