Classic two bar dales pub, GBG 2025 listed. The bars are either side of the front door, each with a counter or in the left hand room more of an elongated serving hatch. The right hand bar has a couple of sitting or dining areas behind and to the right. The Gents is called “inspirational”, it has photos of heroes, perhaps depending on your politics, to inspire. Handpulls in both bars with detached clips indicating what’s on in the other bar, a fair number from local brewery Dark Horse as well as favourites from Taylor’s, Theakstons and Wharfedale. The Old Peculiar is from the wood and is served from a dedicated pull in the rear of the servery. Decorated with a plethora of stuff, such as maps, old photos, and an old beer engine, there’s a corner of Dambusters memorabilia. There’s much more to check out on the walls and the beer’s pretty well kept. The left bar has throwing games, Ring the Bull and wall mounted quoits as well as an old style bagatelle or pin ball machine and a table skittles set mounted on the wall. Open stone fires, flag floors and old beams complete the dales pub picture.

This is an excellent, traditional pub that is clearly ancient.
It has a huge fireplace and a large cruck barn done out as a restaurant at the back.
There were 8 ales on during my visit, Ossett Yorkshire Blonde, Timothy Taylor Golden Best, Saltaire Raspberry Blonde, Ilkley Mary Jane, Moorehouse's Black Witch, Wadworth Henry's IPA and Dark Horse Hetton and Cruck Barn.
I tried the Black Witch and Cruck Barn, both of which were excellent.
Mrs Staal and I ate the lunchtime sandwiches, which were delicious and good value.
Service was excellent. It was quite busy for such an isolated pub at lunchtime. I assume it is a popular stopover for ramblers.
All in all an excellent pub.

Can't reccommend enough. 8 Beautifully conditioned real ales. Great Food and with the log fires and facinating buildings' including the heather thatched cruck barn, its well worth a visit.
