Blue Scrumpy left this review about The White Hart

With just enough time to try 2 further new pubs in Hull before getting the last train of the night back to London, I headed to the White Hart. Although, I ended stopping here a little longer than expected and it turned out to be my last of the night.

You enter into a fairly small front bar with an impressive curved bar in front of you. Beyond that is a larger room with a pool table. The pool table was being played by a couple of lads, whilst the only other customers were an elderly couple in the front bar, where I chose to sit.

The young barmaid was friendly. Beers are listed on a blackboard to the side of the bar. The 4 real ales were Rudgate Ruby Mild & Odin's Gold, Great Newsome Holly Blue & Brew York Make It Nectaron. I didn't initially notice the cider list, but the varied selection was Luke's Vintage Draught, Harry's No. 8, Pilton Labyrinth & Temple Somerset Redstreak. Craft beers were Turning Point Tangled Up In Blue, Verdant Don't Tell Gus & Optical Allusion, Vocation Big Coat & New Bristol Pastel de Nata Stout.

Both the Make It Nectaron ale and the Somerset Redstreak cider I tried were in good condition and I was left wondering how I had not visited this fantastic pub before. Until arriving here, I'd assumed that the Hop & Vine would be my favourite pub of the day, but I think the White Hart just pips it. It was just a shame that there weren't more people in.

As OB says below, very friendly and excellent service at this good looking pub. The two bar staff said hello and goodbye to everyone. Fantastic bar and a decent bar back as well. Apparently this is one of only 14 ceramic bars left in the country. Looks like a couple of handpumps have been removed since 2018 as there's only 4 now, but there's still a good selection of styles available. The rear room has a dartboard and a pool table along with some big screens which were showing a grand prix rerun during our stay, but I didn't see a shuffleboard. I tried a pint and a half of two different beers, both were in good nick. We'll definitely be coming back here next time we're in Hull.

Two room Edwardian pub the interior is a bit plainer than you may expect but with cracking features including a ceramic counter and sumptuous bar back. Darts, shuffle board and pool in large back room as well as a couple of big screens. 6 pulls on the counter all from small breweries plus usual tap stuff and better .  Beer list is shown on clipboards on one wall in the front bar but very neatly done incorporating the Brewery logos, see photo, with descriptions of beers Noticing my beer was a bit manky the barman quietly took a half off into the back then came back and volunteered a replacement, he was right but I was just going to put it down as a poor pub so brilliant service and you better visit it hadn’t you?

I was very glad to see, in passing by on my bike, that this national inventory pub had reopened. Thankfully the original features which led to its classification remain intact, though there are modern floorboards and the walls have been painted (wait for it...) gray. The magnificent ceramic bar is the outstanding feature (see photo), and it has been enhanced by the presence of half a dozen hand pumps and a number of keg fonts. Beers are listed, innovatively, on printed A4 pages attached each to their own clipboard and hung from hooks on the wall. In the room to the rear of this unusual, slightly curved building are a pool table and two shuffle boards - I don't think I have seen one in a pub before but knew instantly what they were. With an interesting selection of well-kept beers as well as the fascinating interior, this pub is a very welcome re-addition to Hull's real ale scene.

A bit out on a limb from the other pubs that comprise the Old Town Ale Trail is The White Hart, not to be confused of course with the much better known Ye Olde White Harte.

The White Hart is an imposing stand alone Edwardian building that dates back to 1904. The pub features in CAMRA’s National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors for its superb ceramic bar counter, of which apparently only 11 remain in the UK. The front room retains original wood panelling and bench seating and a fine mahogany bar back with unusual glazed cupboards. It’s Grade 2 listed.

Outside we see one of the old trademark roundel signs telling us that it’s a former Mansfield Brewery house, now part of the Marstons empire of course. According to the local CAMRA Branch magazine – Pub Mirror ( Aug – Oct 2012 ) - real ale is available.

Unfortunately a prominent notice in the window tells us that the pub is now only open on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 pm till late ( information current at August 2012 ) , so I didn’t get to call in on this occasion.

If I ever happened to be in the area again during those hours then, assuming it hasn’t been converted to a Tesco Metro or the like, I think I’d be inclined to at least poke my head round the door.

This pub is now open Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm. Having undergone some rennovation it has a lovely atmosphere - and a pool table! There is accomodation available too.
