Sports bar with no real ale. Four beers that might be classed as craft, but the one I asked for was not on...
Loud "background" music from bands that scream instead of singing. At least three pool tables and a couple of darts boards, loads of TV screens. There may be some remnants of a heritage pub interior, but I couldn't wait to get out. My half of Amstel was cold and fizzy and £1.90.

Presumably a showpiece pub when built, this vast "brewers' Tudor" establishment now feels a little run down but is well-patronised by students and locals. Lots of original dark woodwork throughout and a number of interesting features, like the revolving door and circular hallway. The main bar runs along the street side, with an area of several pool tables at the end. Inside there is a further bar which tends to attract the locals, with yet another pool table beyond, and also other function and other rooms. A fair range of changing draught ales on offer and condition seemed ok (not always on in inside bar however). Could be splendid with a full restoration, but good to see a place of this size surviving anyway.

This is a massive pub, much bigger than it looks from the outside. Multiple rooms all with different character. One is dark wood panelled, another is a comfortable lounge, there's a large games room to the rear with 3 pool tables. You enter through a revolving door which is unusual and a couple of the rooms are through doors off the entrance area. There are 2 large bars, although only one was in use on our visit. There were quite a few people in although they were dotted around throughout the pub which made it look empty. 3 ales available on the bar from the extended Marston's stable. My pint was OK, but not that well kept. The food was very JDW alike and looked to be aimed at students from the nearby campus. Not bad really.
