Refreshingly well-worn village pub set back from the road. Enter via a pair of red lions who guard the doorway into a building with three distinct rooms, retaining their character and having an olde-worlde feel which was rather nice. To the rear is a massive grassed rear garden enclosed by mature woodland. Three ales on four pumps; a doubled up Brakspear Bitter, Oxford Gold and Hooray Henley. Tried one of each – the Bitter was fine, the Oxford Gold well past its best and the Hooray had a vinegar tint. Shame really, if the beer had been more consistent this would be a place worth seeking out. Sometimes it’s easy to see why so few Brakspear pubs make the Good Beer Guide.

Unashamedly a Brakspear house (as you'd expect around here): once I'd got past the Brakspear signage and A-board and inside, the ale range consisted of four handpumps - two in operation, both dispensing Brakspear Bitter. Which is shame, as The Red Lion is situated on the common in Peppard which is bisected by the B481 and offers a bucolic view if seated out front on a pleasant evening. Two red stone lions guard either side of the entrance, and a small central bar greets you on entrance, serving three distinct areas, and small room with a smattering of tables which you enter into, which itself leads to a similar sized room to the left-hand side of the bar. An open doorway to the right of the entrance and the bar leads to a dog-legged room which was well-populated by the locals, and interior-wise it's all rather Olde Worlde. A bit more adventure on the ale front would see marks upped, and no doubt increase word-of-mouth footfall as it's a nice stop-off if you're in the area.
