Remains an idiosyncratic place. A mid-evening Saturday visit found a chatty stripey blazered landlord presiding over a pub interior bathed in red light like an Amsterdam brothel. Two Wye Valley beers and my Butty was good (NBSS 3.5). A quiet pub – just the chat. Can't argue, it's great fun and worth a visit. I preferred it in here to the R&C… 8.5

Funny little place that doesn’t open until 7 in the evening as the landlord (who I’d heard much about in a couple of the other pubs prior) has a day job and runs this place seemingly as a hobby. As I stood outside waiting for it to open I was joined by a couple of friendly locals who I got chatting to. When the doors finally opened the landlord was indeed the eccentric I had been told about, but the sort of eccentric you’d like to see running a pub. It’s a character two-bar place (sort of C-shaped), with three rooms. Lots of old pewter mugs hanging up from beams. Darts and an upright piano spotted. Three pumps with two on, Wadworth ‘the usual’ and Bath Gem. To my happy surprise I was bought a half by the locals as they liked the fact I had spent all day crawling up and down the train line! Whether or not that made my Gem taste even better I don’t know but it was certainly a fresh and tasty drink (and, unlike the Bull, had clearly been pulled through ready for the evening session) I really liked it here and it’s a shame I could only stop for one. Makes for a good double-header with the R&C and a reason to seek this pretty little village out for a session. Rated 8
