Interesting looking building (well, I think so anyway) of significant age. Enter through what I assume to be an old alley, the servery is located in the huge, scruffy, double-mezzanined rear room, with several separate rooms off said corridor, all a bit Blue Anchor in Helston. Obviously this place spectacularly failed to get anywhere near that benchmark. Two Butcombe ales were clipped with one keen, though thoroughly over-worked barmaid who was juggling bar orders, serving food to hotel guests and fending-off enquiries from an early arriving wedding party. After an interminable wait I ended-up with a poor Rare Breed (NBSS 1.5) which ended-up watering a plant in the rear courtyard. An ominous start to the day’s crawling.

Apparently some of this building was originally a medieval inn. What you have now is a passageway through some nice old buildings, with assorted small drinking areas alongside, leading to a old barn/warehouse sort of building which has been gutted and fitted out with a trendy bar and a modern upstairs restaurant level while retaining the outside walls in the original state of (dis)repair. Accommodation is available and at the back is a patio garden, equipped with fairy lights for the evenings. The overall effect is perhaps a bit modern for an old country town (and priced accordingly) but is not unpleasant. Ales included examples from Milk St and Box alongside Directors and something exotic. Food tends a bit towards the gastro but is very good. Certainly not a traditional pub but would be happy to drink here again.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Archangel

Obviously housed (at least in part) in some historic buildings, this place is a right mixture of various rooms on different levels and on each side of the central corridor. The bar itself is located towards the back and looks like a relatively modern conversion (with a mezzanine dining area above). However, there are a number of other rooms and snugs too, but unfortunately the overall feel is rather sterile. Four handpumps on the bar counter, offering the 'house' Gabri-ale from Milk Street, two beers from Ringwood - Mauler and Old Thumper - and a Lilley's cider.
