An impressive late Georgian coaching inn, on the site of an earlier inn, the main building remaining a hotel while the courtyard and outbuildings form other businesses. There are bars both sides of the main entrance, one known as The Ale House (previously Lamplighters Cocktail Bar), the other just The Bar. The Ale House bar wasn’t open so we went in to the main bar, which is formed from knocking through three original rooms. The staff were very pleasant, the ambience was restful, the décor was vaguely Edwardian, though there was annoying background music on which didn’t quite allow one to wallow in nostalgia. Two ales on, Doombar and Tribute, in fair condition. A pleasant enough place to spend an hour or two and have quiet few pints.

Comfortable town hotel, above average but a little like stepping back in time.
