Not one of Sam Smiths' smarter pubs, with some of the internal décor looking a little the worse for wear, but it's still a proper pub with several rooms showing some interesting features; some of them, like the tiled fire place in the smarter lounge behind the bar, possibly quite old. It seemed very friendly, with a mix of people of various ages and both sexes, and not at all, as my daughter said at the time, an "old man's pub". Just the one real ale, as usual in a Sams pub, but there was also their keg stout and especially their dark mild, which always gives me more of a kick than its 2.8% alcohol justifies because it's only £1.34 a pint. The pub is built on the side of the valley and the gents toilet is consequently down several flights of stairs.
