Don't be fooled by the lack of lights showing if, like me, you're passing by in the evening: it's not closed, just has very efficient curtains. This may be a sign of illicit lock-ins in the past, but a notice outside advertises a late bar, so it's now fully legitimate. The lobby, which has mirrored glass giving the illusion of someone coming through the other door at the same time, admits directly to the drinking area near the bar. There's also a small pool room to the left and a slightly raised area to the right, with standard pub tables, chairs and low stools. The walls here feature an astonishing collection of what I would have to describe as kitsch paintings, mostly featuring romanticised horses, among them the Tetleys dray.
On the bar, disappointingly, there is no real ale - the four hand pumps are no longer in use. There was Thwaites smooth in three different flavours, but draught Guinness was also unavailable, being replaced by cans from the fridge. In a fantasy world, one where there's still a railway line through Earby, for example, this could be an excellent pub with a good choice of Thwaites real ales. Dream on.
