Cape of Good Hope
This idyllic old worlde pub sits nicely on Lock 25 of the Grand Union. Good 48 hour moorings from there to bridge 50a an ideal place to walk into the city centre from.
We crossed via the lock gates, but couldn’t work out how you’d get there from the main road. There were quite a few locals/ regulars enjoying their ales on the seating overlooking the canal. Being served via the open window. Inside is two rooms with a linking bar. Really old and worn looking interior, how proper pubs should look and be. Some great old fashioned bar stools, dart board where we sat. The lounge, had some large and small tables. Some very old but interesting local photos and canal memorabilia.
They had 5 real ales on hand pumps, Slaughter House ‘Swine’, tasty, Green King ‘Abbot’, Tetley’s Bitter, Keystone Hops ‘Weatheroak’, very citrus and would be perfect on a hot summers night, and a very enjoyable Church End ‘Two Locks’. When the swine ran out we then enjoyed Saddleback. Clearly beers well looked after, the bar staff seemed a happy bunch and pleased to serve. Food was a simple pub grub that went down very well.
At the end of our stay we decided to have filled a 4 pint jug (£2) to take away at a reasonable £13 for the Two Locks beer.
They also sell a Fowlers local cheese of earlwood, traditional handmade on the farm by the oldest cheese makers in England 1690. Including extra, extra, extra mature cheddar, strong stuff! Chilli cheddar, garlic and parsley and tasty mature farmhouse.
A great place to rest up after a hard days lock and canalling! Somewhere to go back to!

A great traditional white rendered canalside pub, which forms a part of a range of buildings, with patio area.
The interior has two rooms. The bar is in wood and cream, with darts, Sky TV (that had the Six Nations rugby on) and had bar sttols. The lounge was in brick, with lots of canal memorabilia dotted about. The service was fine, the clientele mixed and it was busy. They had small menu - between £8-15, but we didn't eat.
Beer; tap stuff, with five real ale handpulls; Church End Two Locks, Tetley Cask bitter, Abbot Ale, Wetheroak Keystone Hops and GK IPA. The Church End was OK
A great traditional pub, a must for boaters and real ale fans.

An excellent basic canalside pub serving 6 real ales - and all the other stuff, stout, snacks, Strongbow and a flavourless over hyped insipid yellow liquid. If travelling the Grand Union Canal stop off as it's worth at least several minutes of anyones time.
