The Shrewsbury Hotel is hard to miss in its central location behind a tarmacked front with lots of multicoloured patio furniture that has views of the passing town traffic over a waist high brick wall. The interior is L-shaped with a mix of furniture across the front and up the left-hand side. A long L-shaped serving counter runs across the rear where two banks of six hand pumps are supported, the usual three were available alongside Ludlow Brewing’s Blonde and Black Knight as well as Phoenix Brewery’s Wobbly Bob. While waiting for a decent pint of Blonde I heard someone order a Bobbly Wob, which made me chuckle more than it should have. It’s not great in here and the cask options are less than the other Spoons up the road, but this is still the better option.

This riverside Spoons is extremely popular with much more kerb appeal than its Lloyds counterpart, and was absolutely impossible to find a table on our Friday and Saturday afternoon visits. Average ale selection but a nice enough traditional interior. But ultimately there are much better pubs in Salop and I couldn’t wait to leave.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Shrewsbury Hotel (JD Wetherspoon)
Large building close to the Welsh Bridge, housing a fairly unremarkable 'spoons and a Wetherspoon hotel. Standard-issue furniture and décor in a variety of seating areas, with a large patio beer garden at the front. Busy in the early evening, but the bar and kitchen staff seemed efficient and tables were cleared in a timely fashion. Duplicated selection from the two banks of six handpumps on this first revisit since 2015: Ruddles, Doom Bar and Abbot plus Exmoor's Skip Intro, Butcombe Brewers Strength Original and the beer festival Germain hazy lager from Brouwerij de Bock (£2.69).

Early morning visit for breakfast on my way to Wales. The only beer I noticed was Oakham Inferno. The food was decent, not a bad place to stop.

A slightly-rambling old-school Spoons hotel with library-era décor, in a slightly-rambling old hotel building. With the autumn festival on it was a bit difficult to tell what the normal ale selection is, but it did include some local brews. Service seemed efficient though and it was generally adequate.

After the Lloyds came this, the last one before getting our train. Ale selection slightly better - there actually was Abbot on hand pump - but not by much. Not impressed with Tim's efforts in Shrewsbury.

This large multi-roomed Wethers has gradually improved I have found. It was pleasing to see 4 guest ales on alongside the Green King IPA, Abbott and Doom Bore, rather than just 2 whenever Ive been in. All 4 guests today were Xmas themed. The River Severn over the road was very full today.

This is one of the JDW hotels and was fairly quiet on my Wednesday evening visit. It's a long bar with various areas surrounding it. The bar has two banks of 5 hand pumps but GK IPA, Abbot and Sharp's Doom Bore were all doubled up.
This left Milestone Classic Dark Mild, Exe Valley Shephard's Crook, Salopian Gold and Beartwon Black Bear. I went for the Milestone Mild (£2.35) which was in excellent condition. It's interesting to note that the price differential between the two Shrewsbury Spoons and other pubs is a lot less than I'm used to in London Suburbs and the South, under a pound rather than almost always over a pound.
I preferred this one to the modern place over the road but I don't think either are that brilliant.

Think we caught it on a bad day must have been Managers day off Tables full of dirty plates and glasses and just untidy staff looked as if they did not want to be there. You could have been put off going in Big gang of lads in the beer garden very noisy with a lot of bad language. The bright side we had a good meal

Large JDW ‘lodge’ by the Welsh Bridge with some outside seating taking advantage of a partial view (though it’s mainly traffic in the eyeline). Multi-area’d inside with different painted walls in each one. Chaotic understaffed bars (a pillar divides) with a mish-mash of people queuing and others simply sauntering up and getting served before others. As the staff didn’t really seem to give a hoot I decided to use the dark arts of bar skills to sneakily get ahead by going to a quiet corner and flagging down an errant barmaid like a stranded motorist would the AA. Not really worth the effort as my Beer Studio Dark Side was merely average and came replete with a dirty glass. Food was at least quick out though the standard was poor, no butter on the jacket potato. Pretty unsatisfactory all round and I’d advise to avoid this one and do the Montgomery Tower if you are unshakeably committed to Spooning it up in town.
