This pub recently won an award from CAMRA's Solway branch as Pub of the Season (Winter), so I expected better than to be confronted by three empty hand pumps on a Monday evening in August. No cask beer until tomorrow, the same story that I got at its sister pub in Glasson earlier in the day. Are they putting a cask on Tuesday and expecting it to last until the following Sunday (which it could with a Race spile, I guess) or just an unlucky coincidence? Thwaites Smooth is a much worse alternative when already cooled down after my cycle rides than when I was in need of a cold drink at lunchtime. A cold, sweet drink. There's a £10 minimum spend on a card, though they will run a tab if your first drink doesn't get you there. Two pints of Thwaites Smooth? No thanks. (I ended up having a Guinness, which I must admit was pretty good.)
