Like several other pubs on my visit to Liverpool this week, this is one I've been in before, on a Pubs Galore crawl and with some of my Luton Town mates, both several years ago, but haven't written a review. So I'm here to make up for those lapses. I was more aware of the steps down to the bar counter than previously, having hurt my ankle in a slip on some ice last weekend, but I survived. There are five hand pumps, and Beartown beers are always on, in particular the bitter on the left and a pale on the right, according to the barman. In between is a version of their Creme Bearlee, this one with ginger. The sole interloper was a "tropical, juicy" pale from local Neptune, so I went for the Beartown Best, which was pretty decent (NBSS 3.5, £4.40/pint). I'm glad to have called back here, particularly as I was able to look around a bit more than previously (see photos).

Doctor Duncans is a large pub with a narrow bar area to the right of the entrance where the serving counter faces high tables across the large front windows. Premium and Craft keg were available alongside Carlsberg and the five hand pumps were drawing Bear Town Brewery’s Indoctrination, Best and Crème Bearlee alongside Neptune Brewery’s Spring Tide and Odyssey.
Split level seating with green panelled walls runs up the left hand side of the pub and part way across the rear. To the right of the bar is a very impressive room with green and brown tiling around the walls and up a thin supporting pillar. It’s worth visiting this pub just to have a look in here. In the right rear is more seating with a bit more tiling, including a fire place which is situated next to a dumb waiter and lots of eating utensils. The service was very friendly and I liked the surroundings so I don’t see why I wouldn’t pop back in again if passing.

A large multi-roomed pub with some nice tiling and mosaic on the floor, there were a couple of cask from Beartown plus Titanic Black Ice. A decent enough pub worthy of a visit.

Several years since my last visit to Doctor Duncan's, this was our first stop of a crawl around some of Liverpool's pubs. The interior remains very much as I remembered with the narrow front bar, the magnificent tiled room to the side and cosier carpeted areas to the rear and left-hand side of the bar.
We chose to sit in the green tiled room, which felt a little chilly on our winter afternoon's visit, despite the radiators blasting out plenty of heat. Cain's Bitter is a regular beer here. Also on were their Formidable Ale & Raisin Beer. Guests were Lancaster Kaleidoscope & Neptune Equinox. Bar staff were friendly.
Still definitely worth a visit on any tour of Liverpool's pubs and can easily be twinned with the Ship & Mitre.

I read that this place had been refurbished recently but any changes must have been subtle. Still a beautiful eye catching interior. the real ale choice is only okay these days, it must be said - a lovely White Rat alongside Rev James, Doom Bar, Hobgoblin… yawn. Still, it probably remains in the ‘must visit’ category if just for the architecture.

This very ornate pub has recently been taken over and as such the real ale choice has improved markedly. Gone are the staid constants of Black Sheep, Spitfire, Cumberland, Wainwright's etc and now a more interesting and changing set of ales are offered - Salopian, Titanic and George Wright being examples. Much better than the boring Duncs of old.

one of many truly ornate pubs in Liverpool with several different rooms with unique character. it's really impressive and without seeing the outside you probably wouldn't guess this was a recent conversion to a pub. beer choice wasn't that great but I believe it has been recently taken over so hopefully on the way up.

Passed on my way to Lime Street Station. I had read about this one, so thought it prudent to visit.
Nice interior, especially the tiled room off the main bar.

This is a smart multiple room Cain’s pub, just a short walk from Lime Street station. Entering to a fairly standard wooden floor bar area with plenty of high stool seating, you are unprepared for the wonderful, if somewhat incongruous room to the right of the servery. The room is elaborately tiled with an impressive fireplace, high ceiling and some unusual seating and can be reserved for private functions or indeed be closed altogether, so you need to time your visit well to be able to appreciate it. The rear half of the pub is split level and has a good amount of seating including some nice long benches. A TV screen was showing news coverage and there are a number of framed pictures on the walls with accompanying text detailing the various achievements of the eponymous doctor. Confusingly, there was what appeared to be an old dentist’s sink with various frightening looking attachments in the back room.
A good range of Cain’s beers were available including Bitter, FA, Triple Hop (£3.10), Raisin Beer and Blonde Bird, plus a single guest – Springhead Robin Hood. My pint of the Triple Hop was a little underwhelming and others in our group struggled with the quality of their pints suggesting a possible ongoing problem.
The pub has all the tools to be a great success – a well positioned pub with an interesting interior showcasing beer from the city’s largest brewery – but this promise can’t be realised with poor quality beer. I’m prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that it was a blip, as it’s otherwise a fine place to relax over a pint.
