This sizeable Wetherspoons may be a bit sturdier than the 16th century mansion from which it took its name (it collapsed in 1941) but I doubt it possesses the character or visual appeal of its predecessor. Much of the interior is quite open although there are a few small booths and divided areas and a large snug section at the front before the building squeezes in a bit down the middle and opening out again at the rear.
The lengthy bar contains 10 hand pumps with around 4 guest beers among the regulars and the “available soons”. During our 3 or 4 visits over a long weekend in the area (well you have to have a beer for breakfast somewhere don't you?), they were showcasing Black Hole Ales and I did get the impression that they have a slightly better than average policy regarding their ales than other ‘Spoons outlets.
There isn’t much else about the building that really grabs ones attention, a small brick fire at the rear, some modern artwork and the usual snippets of local history and personalities including a picture of the aforementioned mansion prior to its collapse. It is pretty much a ‘Spoons by numbers that is slightly above the normal JD expectations without leaving you feeling too overwhelmed.
