Another of the 4 pubs tucked away down the alleyways that lead off Briggate and, in my books, ranked second only to its more illustrious neighbour, Whitelocks. The small interior can be a little cramped around the main bar area and the snugs opposite have barely enough room for 2 people and a shopping bag but it does at least ensure cosy and intimate surroundings. An open fire has a large railway station style clock above and the pubs sole TV is perched in the corner next to it. The unusual criss cross ceiling paneling is an unusual feature and compliments the paneled walls and chessboard tiled flooring around the bar. To the rear is a separate room with bare floors and a good collection of pictures and mirrors. The piped music was a bit muffled but not intrusive and there was a pleasant ambience that would appeal more to the mature end of the market. There were 5 ales on the go for my visit – Leeds Pale, Deuchars. Jennings Cumberland, Hobgoblin and Speckled Hen, nothing earth shattering for the area but enough to keep me occupied. Given that there is very little information anywhere about this pub, it seems to be overlooked by many and whilst I would not wish to categorise it under the oft used cliche “hidden gem” I for one am quite pleased I that I found it.
