Blue Scrumpy left this review about Square & Compass
Village local. The pub is located overlooking the village green of West Cornforth, which is seemingly known by locals as "Doggy". I'm not quite sure why, but it's probably a private joke, judging by the cliquey nature of the customers and the slightly uneasy welcome I received here from the landlady/barmaid. She looked at me very suspiciously as I arrived at the bar. I doubt they get many strangers walking in here.
Other customers all seemed to know each other and were chatting away, with the barmaid getting involved. The only exception was a couple of younger lads arriving for a game of pool in a smaller front room. The main room wraps itself around the bar itself. A dog amongst the locals also seemed to take exception to any strangers walking in, whilst The Chase was showing on the TV. The locals seemed delighted to be able to name the most northern city of 3 choices as Durham. Although their geographic location gave them a slight advantage there.
The pub and its location were nice. I even managed to pick up a CAMRA magazine here and with 2 real ales Timothy Taylor Landlord & Wensleydale Falconer, it probably deserves its 2023 Good Beer Guide entry. But it didn't feel particularly welcoming to me.
