A serious drinking establishment with 3 rooms in a modern style, the central one holding a tile-fronted counter with 4 handpumps and a row of wall taps behind. There is also an upstairs area which we didn't venture into. It offers a pretty good range of beers and styles, mainly from Yorkshire and the North East but with a few others, and they seemed in top form. My only slight grumble might have been to have something darker on cask but otherwise quite content. I went for the Three Brothers A Slice of Sunshine which was in great form and I am happy to say the bar staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful on this occasion. Definitely worth doing.

Modern trendy bar and eatery, opened in 2021 as the successor to the Tithe Bar. Relatively well done; there’s a bar off left as you enter with the seating area divided into two by a rectangular knock- through. There’s also an eatery upstairs. Décor choices of vivid turquoise metro tiled servery and banquettes which I quite liked. A perhaps unusual GBG pick, there were four cask and 12 fairly eclectic keg from the rear wall though the cask choice was fairly samey style-wise. Tried a new brewery, Second Sun's Halcyon, which was in good nick (NBSS 3.5) so worth the GBG place. Tweenage bar staff needed a lesson in customer interaction though, they looked like they’d wet themselves each time an adult spoke to them. 6.5

This would be my pub of choice if only time for one in Northallerton. It's an interesting, slightly quirky building with the bar counter displaying six hand pumps in an enticing way. I was here a couple of days after the news of the demise of Great Heck brewery, and hoped to find one of their beers still on, as in the past. No such luck, though there was one in the cellar waiting to come on. The young lass who served me said what a shame it was, as their beers were always popular here and were frequently on the bar. I consoled myself with a very good Tapped Broon Toon, brewed in Sheffield.

Quite pricey in here compared to the rest of town, averaging around £4 a pint. Still it had the best choice of beers across six handpumps. I went for the Bristol Beer Factory Notorious, which was fab, along with Rooster's Baby Faced Assassin. The interior had a small room on the right of the entrance, which was cut off from the main bar and lounge on the left. This was handy if you wanted a bit of piece and quiet. The main bar was facing you on the right, as you walked into the main room and the handpumps were positioned directly in front of you, which was good planning. The décor was cream walls with a collection of pleasing looking pictures and the woodwork was in a dark blue. Definitely one of the best bars in town.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Tithe Bar
Appealing-looking place owned by Market Towns Taverns, although rather more modern in appearance inside the three small seating / dining areas than one might expect. Light twin-tone paintwork offsetting the mix of darker furniture (including some church pews). Six real ales on handpump, with Christopher and Citra (£3.45) from Great Heck amongst the offerings.

Small room to the right on entry to the large main room with the bar to the rear. Six real ales, three were off but the Riggwelter that was on more than made up for that. Reasonable keg offerings as well.

The Market Towns Taverns website mentions a refurbishment here in 2012, but I must admit that on our visit I got the impression it must have been more recent than that: this is a very well presented pub. The young man in charge was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the real ales, and my only quibble, as so often these days, would be the preponderance of pale and hoppy beers. OK, there was Wall's Gun Dog Bitter but the presence of Perle, Celeia and Cascade hops put me off; then there was Ilkley Mary Jane, Okell MPA and Black Sheep Bitter, Hop Studio Gold and Great Heck Mosaic; the only one that caught my eye was Great Heck Black Jesus, a 6.5% stout. As we only had to cycle as far as the railway station, we decided to risk it, and very enjoyable it was too.

I believe this is one of the earliest Market Town Taverns it has the quality expected of the group both in the décor and beer quality, although a little less minimalist than some of the other bars. All the excellently kept cask beers on my visit were from Yorkshire including a cask lager from Naylors - “Cravenbrau”. The usual MTT style décor of brewery signs and posters but still individual enough to know where you are. The seating is mainly chapel pews and seats with the hymn book carrier on the back, beside cast iron base tables. If you like the MTT style you will find this the best pub in Northallerton.
