Visited 10/04/26. Visited previously 05/04/18.

Cask here comprised usual GK IPA, Abbot, Doom Bar and then Spring Hopper from Arkells, Old Rosie cider, Black Dragon cider from Gwynn Y Ddraig, Citra session IPA from Oakham, Top Dog stout from Burton Brewery. Keg offering was pretty standard, Worthington CF, Stella, Angelo Poretti, Bud Light, Budweiser, Leffe blonde, Corona, Coors, Carlsberg, Carling, Guinness, original and dark fruits SB, Ffresh juicy pale ale from Glamorgan Brewing, BrewDog Punk IPA, the Big Sea IPA and the Sumo APA both from Mad Squirrel, Shipyard Pale Ale, K1664, Stowford Press cider.

Large two floor JDW near the Millennium stadium and Cardiff Central station and so not far from their other venue even nearer to the station. The bar counter on the ground floor is a right-angle affair sort of in the middle of the space, with a chessboard tile skirt and furiously busy on my visit. A good part of the ground floor is bare boarded but there are good sections of carpeted flooring albeit the JDW carpet design for this venue is subdued and quite drab. Loads of seating areas and plenty of regular tables, tall tables and booth tables and the odd banquette thrown into the seating options. The upstairs seating area has some sought affair tables in the front windows, but generally there are a lot of tables packed into this area. A bar at the opposite side of the top of the stairs has a good part of the beers available at the much larger bar on the ground floor. Again, upstairs a mixture of bare boarded and the same carpet as ground floor. Plenty of screens here all showing silent action and a large amount of fruit machines. The building is impressive with ultra-high ceilings and a good part of the old theatre retained in the high parts of the building including some of the pill box type booths, but offering sight and no function these days!

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Prince of Wales (JD Wetherspoon)

Housed in a substantial stone building that looks like a warehouse from the side but which has a grand frontage dating from its former life as a theatre and cinema. A mezzanine was added when converted by Wetherspoon, and this is now the best place to see the many interesting relics of its former uses. Plenty of seating on both levels, and in the adjoining building in a different style. Two banks of six handpumps on the main counter, with Oakham Inferno and the more local Flo Rider from Glamorgan (£1.99) in addition to Greene King IPA, Doom Bar and Abbot on one and five ciders on the other. A mostly duplicated selection was available on the smaller upstairs bar, although Vale's Red Kite was also on one of the pulls.

Looks fairly small from the outside but once inside the place is huge. Set on a couple of levels with 2 bars. Beautiful interior left from what used to be a cinema/theatre. Located only a couple of mins walk from The Great Western, I much preferred this one. They even had football on several screens, something I've not seen in a Spoons before.

A Spoons that got a CAMRA outstanding conversion award (from a theatre/cinema) due to various features being retained and integrated into the fabric of the conversion. Inside is a classic modern Spoons over two floors, connected by an attractive staircase. The upper area is certainly the place to be where, to directly lift from another reviewer: “the reminders of the theatre include the stalls, large red velvet drapes, some reproduction stonework and pillars, some private boxes on each side and even a couple of lighting rigs”. It is certainly well-done. Three guest cask on offer but none immediately inspired (the same casks seem to have been dropped off at most of the Spoons in Cardiff and come on at the same time) so I decided to go for a craft can of loopy juice with my dinner. Friendly service from the staff. I prefer the Central as a drinking venue but this one holds enough internal interest to make it worthy of a visit.

Although this was once a theatre it was better known as a cinema in more recent times, well certainly 45 years ago. It was JDW's first outlet in Cardiff opening in Summer 1999. It's a huge cavernous space with an upstairs area that I didn't investigate.
The bar has two sets of five hand pumps that on my visit had an alarmingly poor selection of ales. The two GK beers were doubled up then there was Adnam's Broadside, London Pride, Doom Bore, Spitfire and Brain's SA. This left just the International Golden Perch brewed by Wadworth to fly the flag for anything that isn't a boring national brand. The Golden Perch was in good nick but I had a better or equally good pint of it later in the week in Wales where it was £1.99 not £2.50.
Despite the grand interior I thought this Spoons was a complete waste of time but happily found better things in the next one.

A large Wetherspoon’s pub, handily situated for the shopping, Millennium stadium and the train station. The building was a theatre in a former life, and many of the previous architectural features have been kept in place, which makes for a somewhat more interesting building than many other JDW pubs.

The decor has the is the usual corporate, bland feel that you get in any other mass produced pub, but reminders of the theatre include the stalls, large red velvet drapes, some reproduction stonework and pillars, some private boxes on each side and even a couple of lighting rigs. There’s a great view down from the upper balconies to the lower level of the pub and there are some large arched windows at the front which is a good spot and look down on the hustle and bustle outside.

Beers on this occasion were Brain’s SA, Ruddles County, Abbot Ale, Deuchars IPA and Jennings Sneck Lifter. Good choice of ciders on this occasion, no doubt due to the cider festival that they have on – Strongbow, Thatcher’s Gold, Addlestones, Mr Whithead’s Festival cider, Green Valley Strong cider, Sandford Orchard’s Devon Scrumpy and Weston’s Cider Twist Raspberry.

This impressive Wetherspoons pub is located in the heart of Cardiff's St Mary Street, just a short stroll from the Central train station.
Cardiff's infamous nightlife meant that it was packed when I turned up on a Saturday evening and perhaps unsurprisingly, all ales were off apart from the Ruddles. I can't say that this experience is likely to be replicated at other times of the week though.
The building is a converted theatre and you get a great sense of the place if you go to the top floor and stand with your back to the bar, from where all the old balconies and features are visible - great to see such a building being put to good use.
