My first pub upon arrival into Berwick was this town centre locals' boozer. I was hoping for something a little more adventurous than the Greene King IPA that was on, but service was friendly and there was quite a lively atmosphere for a midweek afternoon. Horse racing was being shown on TVs. There probably is worse in Berwick itself. But I didn't experience it.

The bizarre and beautiful Art Deco glazed and funnelled frontage immediately grabs your attention. The promise dies on entering, the inside being a long and fairly bland knock-through. The servery is modern but at least ornate (an assumed 90s insertion). Bright and warm on a cold dreary evening which is something that couldn’t be said for a number of other nearby places. Two pumps with GK OSH on and, whilst barely drinkable as a brew, was in surprisingly decent nick (NBSS 3.5), served-up by an efficient and friendly mature barmaid. The theme tune from Convoy came on and I thought “it could be much worse in Berwick” (which came to pass).

A largely unexciting town pub, apart from the exceptional glazed entrance. Otherwise the pub drifts back aimlessly, with conventional furnishings, to a rear area with sports screens. On handpump were GK IPA and a GK special, Biera Colada, a pineapple-flavoured brew which was actually in good condition and quite tolerable.

The pub does have an interesting looking entrance, with it's bow shaped windows. Once through the doors that's where it goes pear shaped. The overwhelming smell of cheap muck food, will send you running back out. Two handpumps TT Golden Best and Bombardier.

An excellent, no-nonsense, main street pub which gives you what you went into it for - good variety of drinks at reasonable prices and/or heaps of good quality food at reasonable prices, all served by very friendly staff. 10 out of 10...and thanks, we will be back! (the only drawback for some folks is that the loos are upstairs) Ray and Joan Findlay-Sunderland
