Strongers . left this review about The Midland

The Midland is U-shaped carpeted pub with a short staple-shaped serving counter that supports standard keg alongside Madri. Booths run up the right-hand wall and a beer shelf runs under the front windows opposite the counter. Some raised seating is found to the left rear with an ornate mirror and bookcase wallpaper, which I think sums this place up quite well in that there are some nice features, but also some tacky high street touches have found their way in. There’s lots of panelling and the moulded ceiling with gold painted edging wouldn’t look out of place in a theatre, but it doesn’t gel when it’s all put together. No televisions, but there was some background music playing for the benefit of the five or so people on a recent midweek evening. I think it’s worth popping a head in for a look, especially if one likes mirrors, but now I’ve been I’ll not be returning.

Another heritage pub, but after the Vines this one is fairly ordinary, with limited features preserved and some rearrangements leaving comparatively little to appreciate. No real ale as well, so not much to linger over. Plus points? My half of keg Theakstons Mild was tolerable (and cheap), as was the background music, though if it had been Marmalade as in the previous review I might have been less forgiving.

one of the many keg only old codgers boozers in this area, it was packed this Friday afternoon so I had to prop myself on the bar drinking my half of Carling. it’s a very nice placr though not quite as ornate as next door. crap beer and even crapper Marmalade on the jukebox reduces the rating. but better than most anyway.

One of 2 pubs next door to each other and its basically the bar while next door is the lounge. Its a nice pub and can get full. The single room curls around the servery and is adorned with several ornate mirrors. No real ale. Unlike next door no karaoke. Thank God.

Old Boots left this review about The Midland

Next door to the Commercial but lacking the charm of a splendid victorian interior in spite of the promising exterior. Mostly modernised with a faint railway theme, some old style fittings remain round the edges of the single L shaped room which has a raised area at one end. The décor is quite tasteful although the elderly customers ain’t and they’re not as lively as next door or even the Globe round the corner, the staff are ok though. Glasses stand at the ready under the many keg taps but others await on the shelf, stored open end up – probably a bad idea. There are no handpumps but there is a good view of the goings on in Ranelagh Street through the big clear windows.
