Called in on Saturday lunchtime and the place was empty .You have to walk along a long passage with unused rooms leading off to get to the bar from the station.Decor and furniture looked tired.Only had 3 real ales on -all from Liverpool Organic brewery -one of which was sour. Not a great experience but worth a visit if waiting for a train.

After an excellent day snapping and beer sampling, had just time for a pint before my train journey home. For convenience and the fact it boasts a few bars, thought I would give The Head Of Steam a try.On entering I noticed the only pumps on the bar were 3 lagers and 1 Guinness so I asked for the other bars, the barmaid replied saying this was the only one open.I ordered half of Carling but was told the pump was not working, the girl then disappeared out of sight to some far off bar,and then what seemed like about 10 minutes arrived back with a Pint of Carling, and although I only ordered half was not to concerned as I had worked up a thirst by then.Just before leaving I asked for directions to the toilets, the barmaid said they were locked, but she did accompany me there and duly unlocked the door. Not an enjoyable stay but at least it was my last port of call.

The main bar is a magnificent setting for a drink but avoid the other bar. Usually only a small proportion of the many handpumps pumps are in operation, on my last visit only four plus one for the cider out of about 14. Usual mix of customers is mainly rail passengers and some passing trade. My Pheonix Spotland Gold was spot on and I would have stayed for another but time was pressing.
