This Spoons looks great from the outside. However, the interior has well and truly had it's day as the place is scruffy. We sat at the front and I noticed that the upholstered chairs were filthy and walls grubby. My arm was sticking to the table as it hadn't been wiped for a good few hours. I stuck it out and finished my beer, as it was from the Northumberland Brewery, which is one of my favourite breweries. Hopefully the next time I call the place will be refurbed.

This wasn't a bad Wetherspoons, and the coal effect fires make it more welcoming than most, and it does feature in the 2012 Good Beer Guide. The latest beer festival was in full flow, but there was prompt service and a good selection of ales available. Not far from the bus station and within the main shopping shopping area it is worth including on any pub crawls of the city.

As so often with JDWs, the Water House's main interest is the building itself. It's an old commercial building rather than a pub, spacious and airy but spoiled by tacky furniture and uninteresting food. It is a good place to meet for a morning coffee, but being just outside the historic bit of the City it doesn't fall neatly into a crawl where the ale quality is paramount. The atmosphere is a bit lacking, the staff are friendly, the beer is too cold and the clientele is a mixed bag ranging from suits to drunks. All in all a typical, if poorer than average, 'spoons.

Smallish Wetherspoons with an unusual seating arrangement at the back of the pub. Usually has 3/4 guest ales on alongside the usual crew, pretty well kept in my experience. Service is pretty good but being close to the bus station/railway station it gets it's fair share of pondlife. It's OK for one.
