Roger Button left this review about The Furness Railway (JD Wetherspoon)
Originally built in 1889 as a Department Store, this is a fairly large if formulaic Wetherspoons situated at the edge of the shopping area in was previously the town’s Co-Op which had closed in 1999. The interior is wide but not very deep and is divided into 3 or 4 sections that are all much of a muchness with typical ‘Spoons décor.
Since most people outside of Barrow are probably not familiar with the town’s history or the importance that the Furness railway line played, the old pictures and history snippets on display are actually quite an interesting raed.
The 12 hand pumps had a decent choice of guests and “available soon” labels were few and far between on my couple of visits which was good to see.
As one would expect, it can get very busy although I always found a table available, even during England’s washed out game in Poland that everyone had gathered for.
The bottom line is that it’s a ‘Spoons so you know what to expect whether that be good or bad and given that Barrow isn’t a priority ale destination, it will have more appeal than some of the other pubs in town.
