The Dun Cow is a wonderful old town pub close to the old City centre and dating from about the 16th Century. There is a plaque inside linking the pub with the legend of St Cuthbert. The larger bar at the back makes it feel much larger than the small frontage suggests. There are bar snacks available at a reasonable price, andthe staff are very friendly and welcoming. Three ales on; I had the Castle Eden which is the regular beer here and always served in excellent condition. An essential part of a City crawl and a pub to which I am happy to return any time.

Decent looking pub with a snug at the front and a larger bar area at the rear.
Three beers on tap plus Strongbow & Woodpecker cider and 24 whiskies chalked up on a board.
There were a couple of old guys out the back just sat in the corner and playing on a banjo and fiddle which created a nice atmosphere. From the few pubs I've sampled in Durham, this seems to be one of the best.

One of my regular haunts when I'm staying in Durham at the Court Inn just around the corner. There's a smallish snug to the right as you enter and a larger room to the rear which has a quiz machine which I often have a game or two on. I almost always have a pint (or two) of Castle Eden as I don't see it very often and it's always in superb form in here. One of my favourite pubs in Durham.

Good real ale on tap. Friendly service. This pub would have to go into one of the 5 best pubs in County Durham.
