Although surrounded by scaffolding, the Carlton seemed to be open when I was passing on St Patrick's Day - lights were on and the doors were oppen.

More of a local's pub really and it is a bit rough around the edges. Very cheap ( probably due to the Wetherspoons nearby). Only Brains SA available when I called for a quick half (£1.35). I last called in here in 2006 and it hasn't changed much!

Its definitely a passing trade place as you won't be inclined to have a second drink.

Strange place that looks like it's trying to be a JDW but without the class. :-))
Lots of cheap food and drink offers including one beer at £2.20 per pint. I said I'll have a half, the barman said that will be £2 please!!!! Needless to say I had a pint. Apparantly only the pint was on offer, very weird. A few quite sad looking people around and no atmosphere at all in complete contrast to the nearby Palladium which was packed. Trying to compete with the Palladium is obviously a bad idea as it's not working. I think they need to try something else. I think it could be a smart place with a bit of a spruce up. There are wood panels around the walls and some decent old features, but they're not making the most of it at the moment.

The building clearly has some history although is looking a bit run down now. It’s one of those pubs that attracts the lower end of the market and has cheap beers and food offers. Bit of a rough and ready customer base and it nearly kicked off when I visited as someone was accused of being banned. An amusing episode followed when a couple of guys asked what brandy they had, “Connoisseur” said the barman uncertainly, “Courvoisier” I helpfully confirmed to a confused looking customer. He said “Oh that’s OK, that’s a decent one”, then proceeded to order two large ones and drown them in lemonade. Overall a pretty depressing place and I felt a bit sorry for the bar staff. Beer wise they have a few hand pumps and I had a decent pint of EPA.
