Originally a private house, it was built in the 16th Century and became a pub in the Victorian period. The full history of the pub is on a board on the way to the gents’ lavatory, and it’s well worth a read. There is no real garden, just a small outside seating area at the front and a car park. Inside, the single bar is sort of Z-shaped, a pool table at one end, a large inglenook with a woodburner and copper hood in the middle. A dark tartan carpet runs throughout, making the place feel rather sombre. There is a TV screen which was showing live horse racing when we visited, competing with easy listening on the stereo, while a dartboard appeared unused. There were a few high chairs around the bar counter, and there were various tables scattered around. The landlord wasn’t very chatty, but when he did speak he explained that his opening hours were limited due to being in a ‘sleepy hollow’, a view supported by our being the only customer on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The pub doesn’t do food, though there is a pizza van which visits a couple of nights a week. Only one ale on, Old Speckled Hen, which was drinkable. Also available were Guinness, Madri, Thatcher’s Gold, Carling, Moretti and Amstel. It’s a bit out of the way so it’s unlikely I’d make an effort to come here unless there was a good reason, but it would probably be a good local if it was open more often.
