Notes becoming sparse by this stage, though it didn’t feel much different from my visit many moons ago and the internal pub narrowboat remains. “It's a smashing venue. Staff not that bothered about the wares. Feels like the effort is for students and dining. Six ales on, my half of Verdant Lamanva is decent (NBSS 3)”. WhatPub also states “Numerous ciders, perries and a selection of 13 craft keg lines are also available. Also of note are the fridges, housing over 200 bottled beers” which I somehow managed to miss. I think it’s definitely one to do if you haven’t crawled Nottingham before, absolute novelty factor and a decent enough ale range/condition ratio. I’m quite likely to reappear. Maybe a bit more sober.

A Tynemill (aka Castle Rock) pub which has a USP that means it is worthy of a visit, the canal spur that runs into the pub (you cross a footbridge over it at the entrance to the bar) which often has a boat or two moored in it as it is accessible - the boats are not merely decorative. Now that bit’s out of the way, let’s do the rest of the review. The pub is housed in a large converted warehouse on the canal-side. The interior bar is pretty barn-like (a turn-of-the-millennium modern interior conversion) and didn’t do a huge amount for me, I think this is Tynemill’s attempt at attracting the student/city-dweller crowd for late opening. Beer-wise there are half a dozen ales with four from Castle Rock and there’s a big emphasis on bottled beers alongside some premium keg. The beer quality was a mixed bag and the female bar staff were pretty uninspiring on my visit, brusque and clearly preferring to relax than work. Another big selling point of the is the outside ‘garden’ which is a large cobbled wharf-side area packed with seating and covered by a glass roof, an ideal summer’s sun-trap and a great spot to watch the passing boat traffic. The gents, as noted elsewhere, are quite a hike up numerous stairs. Well-worth the visit for the novelty value or on a summer's day. However I’d be less inclined to do this one over the other two Tynemill pubs in Nottingham on a return visit unless I had plenty of time. Rated 7

A pub situated within an old canal side warehouse and indeed as previously mentioned part of a canal dock is within the pub itself. The pub space is open plan and roomy despite being fairly busy. Six handpumps offering a range with Castle Rock being prevalent my choice being their Screech Owl.
A decent pub with an added novelty factor.

Through the entrance of the Canalhouse is a bridge that crosses the canal, and a canalboat, certainly a new one on me. The bar area is open plan with a bar counter along the rear wall that faces lots of standing room. In amongst the keg are six hand pumps that were drawing four from Castle Rock alongside Vocation’s Tonka Frappe and Abbeydale’s Menelaus. It was reasonably quiet during my recent Wednesday evening visit, I imagine it fills up with the younger inhabitants of the city during the weekend.

Another Castle Rock pub close to Nottingham railway station, this one is much bigger than Barley Twist, where I'd just come from.
Once inside, it is immediately obvious that the pub is arranged around the canal. This must surely be the only pub in the country with a canal barge floating in it? A bridge takes you over to the bar where there is a spacious area with seating. More seating can be found by crossing back over the canal over a second bridge.
Castle Rock Harvest Pale is the regular beer here. In addition, there was Castle Rock Screech Owl, Our House & Oatmeal Stout, RedWillow Effortless & Siren Memento. The real cider range seems to have been reduced somewhat since my last visit in 2018. Although, they still had Sandford Orchards Devon Scrumpy & 3 from Lilley's - Mango Cider, Rhubarb Cider & Pina Colada Cider.
Toilets are a bit of a trek up two flights of stairs. Still a good pub, but I scored it a 9/10 in summer 2018. This time it's probably a 7.5. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt with an 8/10.

My first visit here for a number of years. This and the other canal-themed pub next door used to be staples of a trip to Nottingham, whether with my football mates from Luton or with the Pubs Galore crowd. Perhaps the novelty of a pub with a section of canal dock actually inside it has worn off a little. Though in fact the pub was quite busy when I turned up a little before 6 on a midweek evening. As I said, quite busy, so I plunged through the crowd at the bar and came up with a half of Castle Rock Black Gold, which was pretty good.

Called in many times since my last review, the last time being just over a week ago. Sadly they're not trying very hard at the moment beerwise with just Harvest Pale available on cask. Given that the brewery tap the Vat & Fiddle just around the corner had six Castle Rock beers on the bar.

Tynemill pub, so mainly Castle Rock beers. Great location and the unique feature of the canal inside the pub. The 2 beers I had were well kept and the bar staff were very friendly. Tynemill run a promotion called "one over the eight". you collect 8 stickers, one with each pint, over as many days/weeks/months as required and then get the ninth free. Unusually, the promotional beer in here was a lager, I've never seen that before. The quiz machine is of pensionable age, but that is true of several Tynemill pubs in Nottingham e.g. Vat & Fiddle, Newshouse. A great little pub chain though.

Well worth a visit here - how often will you see a canal with a barge on inside a pub? Very good choice of beers on with a fair few local ales. Not cheap but it doesn't have to be. The menu looked good and the beers we tried were in good shape. I would definitely call again.

truly unique concept with a working canal with boats in the center of the pub. This is a great find and is one of only a very few places that can cater for a genuine pub lover who wants a slightly livelier experience in an evening without having to resort to a bar. Although this place is still perfect for visiting in the day when things are more relaxed. In the evening moderate music is played at a nice level and a live singer is also usually on and this attracts a nice respectable clientele who are looking for a relaxed social evening. Outside there is a tremendous outside seating area overlooking the canal that is a sun trap and the perfect place to enjoy a beer in the sun .
There are six cask ales available with owners castle rock frequenting the most, they also tend to stock the seasonal castle rock ales more than other castle rock outlets do, along with one two guests. On my visit I enjoyed a pint of gales beachcomber summer ale and this was a lovely pint although a bit more expensive than other castle rock pubs that I put down to the slightly more up market appeal of this pub. There is also a hung range of tap “craft” beers available at their usual obscured prices and the biggest bottle selection in the city, it is impossible to not find a beer you like with the hundreds of choices on offer. A truly great pub that Is a must visit for ale and pub lovers.

A converted canalside warehouse. A novel feature here is that the inside has 2 canal boats moored in the middle of the pub. The place is a large single room and the servery is accessed by walking over a small bridge over the boats. 9 handpumps but only 6 on. There is an outside area that is glassed over so you can sit on the canalside in most weathers. As its a warehouse its all bare brick and wooden floored.

Converted warehouse that has the feel of a beer keller, exposed brick & cast iron beams/pillars, subdued red lighting. Pump clips all over the ceiling. The bridge over the canal wharf is a nice touch, couple of boats moored there. Rather warm, as is the beer, but can't help but like it.
