Blue Scrumpy was luckier than me. I should have trusted my instincts. In on a Wednesday lunch at around 1pm, there were two other drinkers in there. Both on Carling. I was somewhat surprised they were even selling cask, but Holdens Golden Glow and Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven (chosen) were both on. I had done my research - this place appears in (an admittedly out of date) Dudley Real Ale Trail booklet. The review here suggested it was fine. Untappd showed frequently changing ales and some of my favourites.

It was, of course, near undrinkable. Not pulled through or been on for far too long. Cloudy when it should have been clear. Smelling of vinegar.

The quietness of the place and the smug responses of my keg drinking colleagues meant that I battled through, waiting to cleanse my palate with a Bathams at the Kidderminster end of the railway line.

Awful.

I promise to myself (again) to ask for a sample for all untrusted places.

I've driven down Quarry Bank High Street many times over the years, but can't say I've ever even noticed this pub. As it happens, it was just about my favourite pub of the day on this visit to the West Midlands.

Locals were spilling out onto the pavement when we arrived and there was no space in the rear car park which only has room for 3/4 vehicles.

The busy front bar had a disco and live singer on our Sunday afternoon visit. It has a fireplace in the front right corner, St George's flags on the ceiling and a TV showing live cricket on mute. A smaller room to the rear left had a dartboard. There is also at least one outdoor table at the rear next to the car park.

There were 4 handpulls in the front bar. I note that WhatPub says there are 2 further handpulls in the rear room, but I didn't notice these. The 4 cask ales on were Greene King Spring Break, Bewdley Worcestershire Sway, Enville Ale & Three Tuns XXX. Looking around, most of the regulars appeared to be drinking lager. So, I was a little concerned that the beer quality would not be the best. However, my Worcestershire Sway was absolutely fine.

There were also plenty of keg ciders. Thatcher's Gold & Haze, Kopparberg, Blackthorn, Aspall's & Strongbow were all available. Various drinks offers are available and I noted that quite a few of the locals had some kind of discount cards they could get stamped presumably for a free drink or some kind of discount.

Children are allowed in, as long as they were not too bothered by the boisterous (and many drunk) locals. Apparently there is karaoke every Friday. With it being quite busy, I was particularly impressed by the speed and efficiency of the landlord. Working on his own, he was getting through orders really quickly leaving nobody waiting for long.

For me, this is a well-run and popular High Street pub and one I'll now look out for each time I pass by!

Proper old school locals boozer which always has a couple of ales on. I call in from time to time as I'm from Quarry Bank and it always seems to be busy. Long may it continue!

A cottage styled white rendered terrace pub

The interior is small and open plan and is in white and wood panel, with the spartan decoration supplied by a few plain framed mirrors and a few old photographs. There was a brick fireplace and a small wood bar. There was darts and a TV. Service was fine, the clientele mixed and it was busy.

Beer; tap stuff, with Banks's MILD and a decent Skinner's Cornish Blond wheatbeer, the excellent Enville Ale and Salopian Golden Thread on handpull, along with the untried Holden's Golden Glow.

A little plain inside, the pub is rightly, in my opinion, in the GBG 2010, as the ale choice and it's quality was very good. I will visit again.

A one roomed pub around a central bar, its a bit basic and nothing really special. Traditional pub decor - carpet, mahogany tables/chairs.

It feels like it needs some tlc and a bit of thought/money to improve - eg there was a real fire place not in use, they were using the radiators on full blast, some of the decor was a bit worn, that kind of thing.

Mind you the beer was well kept (Old Swan Bumblehole) and its in walking distance of the Bull & Bladder.
