What a lovely pub! All nooks and crannies and lots of bric a brac. The front window sill had a record player with a horn, and next to it a two gallon jug. Ten hand pumps, and my half of their own ESB, Consett Ale Works Plate Mill 5.2% had a bit of a tang to it. The other beer of theirs that I tried was very good, plus I had Wylam Jakehead and Darwin Rate Stout that were both very good. Beers were £3.50 for their own and £5 for guests, including Landlord and Bass. I wish I'd had longer here, but the bus service from Durham was behind schedule, and they very kindly rationalise mine, so I was half an hour late getting here, an excuse that I can't use on the train back to Sheffield. So, a very rushed visit but enjoyable.

How lucky were we - the pub had recently reopened plus they were having a Beer Festival. We arrived at 12 noon and met the landlord and landlady, who made us very welcome, along with a friend of theirs helping out for the day. We got prime position near the window and started with a locally made pie, peas and gravy. I am a big fan of their Consett ales, which is brewed at the rear of the pub, so I managed to go along the pumps and have a pint of each, along with various beers from the Festival Beer List.
We met a good few locals on this visit, who were all very friendly and chatty. This is definitely a good destination pub and well worth a visit. To get here we got the X45 outside Newcastle Railway Station, which was £6 return. The X70 which stops outside the pub takes slightly less time, so we got this on the way back. We really enjoyed our visit here, in fact it was a tough one to leave. Excellent.

The Grey Horse is currently closed for refurbishment. It is the home of the Consett Ale Works Brewery. Re-opening is planned for mid-August.
