A fairly basic local that has never really lived up to its moderately-imposing building. The front terrace is wedged with benches; inside is more spacious in a C-shaped room with the counter to the front. There is a screen and dartboard at one end, another screen in the middle and a pool table round the back, with various mismatched furniture. The carpet has certainly seen better days and the lower walls are now a dingy olive green, adding to a general air of laissez faire about the place. This extends to the cask beer, which was a barely-drinkable Tribute. Needs a bit of TLC.

This pub has the usual modern open plan layout in what is now a large space and clearly once three perhaps four rooms. The bar is straight ahead of the main entrance, to the left is a comfortable seating area with leather effect chairs, larger tables but also a dartboard. The room winds back beyond the bar with a few sofas then culminates in a standing area with a pool table. Decor is pleasant, light walls with a reddish colour to dado rail height, lots of old photographs of the area plus Epsom race meetings, and a few framed old style advertisements. A couple of fireplaces look to have real log fires when required. A few TVs around the place plus a fold down screen obviously for bigger sporting events. To the front is a raised outdoor veranda with good views across the busy Portsmouth Rd to the lagoon and river beyond.
Two handpumps, serving a rather ordinary choice of Courage Best and Wells Bombardier. I had the CB which was perfectly kept to be fair.
A decent pub, to me slightly failing to make the most of its location and opportunity. Still worth a look in though for a quick pint if passing nearby.
