A surprisingly large pub located in the centre of the village, it extends some way further back than might be envisaged from the outside and also has a courtyard garden to the side.
Internally, the main bar area is at the front of the pub, and although this has a certain rustic charm, it was rather dominated by a pool table. Flooring is predominantly rough wooden boards with a few flagstones around the bar, a few black beams on the ceiling and black supporting timber posts as well. Much of the walls were painted a deep red colour and here were various nautical artefacts dotted around such as a ship’s lantern, ropes, pulleys and so on as well as a few shelves with a collection of old bottles. If it hadn’t been for the pool table, it would all have felt quite cosy. A corridor at the rear led to a further room which also had a smaller bar counter, although this was closed on our visit. This was somewhat brighter and airier, with a large roof lantern, quarry style tiling on the floor and some old leather arm chairs and sofas.
Beers on tap were proper Job and Dartmoor Jail Ale, with a third pump appearing unused. Ciders were well represented with Devon Red, Devon Mist, Devon Scrumpy and Wilde Cherry from Sandford Orchards, along with Cornish Orchard’s Cherry & Blackberry.
