A Victorian town pub on the edge of the historic town area. It has a cramped carpark and is on the one-way system, so it’s best to approach on foot. The single bar is carpeted and has an area dedicated to the pool table. There is also darts and a couple of TVs showing Sky Sports. There is an open fireplace, but few other interesting architectural features have survived various renovations. Free WiFi is available, and there is a small garden, not particularly inviting and a bit noisy. They do basic pub grub, but it’s little pricey for the setting. The staff were friendly enough, though some of the locals seemed a bit hostile. Two ales on, both from Palmers: I had the Best which was in very good condition, most enjoyable. It’s not the most welcoming of pubs, but I’d be happy to include on a crawl for its beer quality.
