A basic down to earth bar, long and thin, counter on your right past a weird separated area. A low T-bar and a range of solos offers a fairly basic choice of the usual kegs, Red Stripe is maybe a bit unusual, otherwise it’s unsurprising. Laminate floor, exposed stone wall to one side, but a bit of tongue and groove and a small amount of architrave suggests a long lived pub here. Banquette seating along the left hand wall at granite topped tables on wood or cast iron bases. The rear toilets are labelled cludgies and are up a step or two from the main bar. Screens, machine and piped music all present and correct. Very much a locals pub.

We had to visit this bar as one of the crew shares the surname although in his case with the Irish Mc spelling.A traditional exterior,a one room bar like a scene from Rab C Nesbitt with a motley collection of older scottish drinkers, one with a pony tail long enough to wipe his arse.A maingy ,slobbering dog and regulars pertched on bar stools completed the line up.However the welcome was friendly from the barmaid. However there was an overwhelming smell of disinfectant,I think rather too many urinal cubes had been added to the bowls in expectation of heavy use by the regulars, who seemed well installed by our 11am entry. We sat at the long bench seat on the left wall, decorations were largely absent.
No cask ale,the keg selection was boring so we sufficed with halves of Guinness and Red Stripe.Even the whisky selection looked standard..Musicians will play here and there is a tiny booth area to the right, maybe once a mixing desk but these days where someone with a guitar or pipe could get a sing song going.
No need to visit, the smell hastened our departure .

It was a pleasure to find a normal pub in the increasingly bar/diner dominated city centre. I obviously wasn't the only person who thought so, as the place was packed, with a mixture of locals and tourists, and very lively on the Friday night of my visit. A guy with an acoustic guitar was providing live musical entertainment. A pint of Guinness cost me £3.60 and John Smith's, plus Tennent's, Fosters and Stella Artois lagers were also on tap, as was Strongbow cider.
