An odd one, as Quinno mentioned three years ago. Coming here after the superb Athletic Arms was inevitably a let down. The atmosphere was more hotel bar than corner local, probably not helped by the absence of the fish wife who was here in November 2021. (There's a nice little "public bar" to the left, but this was totally deserted, with a "ring for service" sign on the counter.) As before, four hand pumps widely spaced (why?) and not a lot to choose between them apart from strength. I went for Stewart Pentland IPA, but it was as disappointing as I have found it before, and Jarl, which can be brilliant but was only good. Still, two beers at NBSS 3 are not to be sneezed at, except when you've just come from a pub that has changed your mind about a previously middle of the road beer.

A wedge shaped corner pub of the type in which Edinburgh seemingly specialises. A tidy interior, CAMRA Heritage listed at a regional level; a light wood bar with a couple of mirrored dividers, red wine leather banquettes and a tasteful cream gold and red paint job on the intricate ceiling. Four ales via two banks of pumps spaced well apart so I missed a couple of options upon entering. In total we had Fyne Jarl, a Stewarts one and a good Swannay Island Hopper (NBSS 3.5). After settling I noted some downside - dirge music and four TVs alternating between cricket and racing that nobody in the place (all middle aged or old men bar a token fishwife) was watching. I guess I’d been spoiled by now but this one didn’t stand-out in the way that some others did and I wasn’t inclined to consider staying longer than necessary. 6.5

Traditional pub on the route from the city centre to Murrayfield stadium. The pub retains a lot of original features and was serving 1 real ale. Pies, bridies and toasties served.
