An attractive looking, stone-built pub located in a side street just south of Edinburgh’s Old Town and slightly away from the touristy hot spots, it has a quite enormous beer garden to the side which was dominated by an equally large screen showing a sports channel, so this should, I suppose, have given me a taste of what was to come.

Despite it’s attractive exterior, internally it’s clearly been “renovated” at some point and now has a rather bland and generic feel to it with a shiny wood strip floor and nothing in the way of any character. To be fair, they have kept some exposed stone walling in places, and elsewhere the green wood panelling on the walls could perhaps be described as elegant were it not for the inset TV screens showing more football. There were also large piles of logs stacked up in recessed alcoves, although I suspect these were more for effect than actual use, despite a couple of small fireplaces around. Elsewhere were some old maps of Edinburgh but little else of any note. Perhaps if they dumped the TV’s, removed the rather garish lighting and did something to soften the acoustics so that it wasn’t so noisy, I might have warmed to it rather more.

There were no real ales on tap unfortunately, although I did spot Punk IPA as well as something else from Brew Dog on keg. Ciders meanwhile were Magner’s and Outcider which was a new one on me, but I can’t say that I particularly enjoyed it.

No longer a Nicholson's pub. Quite a dark interior with a central island bar serving real ale,"craft keg" and standard keg. Large courtyard if the weather is nice.

Large Nicholson's pub in the south of the city. Unusually for Edinburgh there's a large outdoor drinking yard which is very pleasant when the sun is shining. The inside is a mish mash of dining tables, stools, comfy sofa's and chairs etc. The usual standard Nicholson's menu is available. There were 4 handpumps on the bar serving changing guests. We had a different beer each and sadly both of them were pretty poorly kept. Not quite bad enough to send back, but not very good. It's a decent pub let down by a lack of cellarmanship.

A large, comfortable, one room lounge with a full island bar in the middle and a real fire in one corner. Seating is a mixture of low sofas and the customary pub chairs. There is a good range of beers on draught, including four real ales, although two of them were unavailable on the afternoon of my visit. The beer garden outside is as big as the interior and would be a pleasant place to sit in better weather.
