CAMRA heritage pub of national importance and indeed it's a stunner. Floor-to-(high)-ceiling frieze tiling with depictions of various countryside pursuits alongside stained glass windows and an ornate carved wood circular bar with dividers and back, though somewhat spoiled by the large muted TVs and blaring music. This is a locals redoubt with the odd character thrown in and indeed it was already bustling just after midday on a Tuesday lunchtime with a loud crowd in situ (partially because they had to bellow over the music). No cask here so a McEwans 80/- sufficed. Well-worth a visit to have a nose.

If it wasn't for the interior decor, this would be just another run of the mill bar, selling mainly McEwan's beers but no real ale. What raises it above the commonplace, however, is the outstanding tiling all around the walls and reaching right up to the high ceiling. The stained glass windows are also attractive and the two flat screen TVs are located reasonably unobtrusively. If you're interested in pub architecture, this is worth a trip out from the city centre for.

Horseshoe shaped bar with glazed wooden panels dividing up the serving area. Ornate tiling on the walls.

Despite it looking a bit bland outside, this pub has an attractive interior. The walls are almost fully tiled with a decorative frieze, mirrors and some large sporting themed murals. The stained glass in the windows mentioned John Doig which may indicate an alternative or previous name. No cask beer available, two TV‘s showing racing. A fairly down to earth clientele of whom I felt the staff were a little wary. An over 25’s rule is in place but that didn’t pose much of a challenge to those of us in there.
