I just saw the news that the Golf Tavern had gone, and was disappointed, as that pub and the Tyneside were the highlights of a summer 2024 mini crawl of this pleasant town. This one was slightly more modernised, but not to an unreasonable degree. The former lounge area seems to operate as some kind of restaurant, but the bar has sensibly been allowed to keep a pubby atmosphere, with carpeted floor, seats around the periphery, and some CAMRA magazines scattered about. I remember seeing this one advertised in such magazines a lot in the 00s, so it was kind of on my list. International football was being shown unobtrusively on a small TV on my visit. There were 2 or 3 East of Scotland brews, and I didn't have any complaints (forgot what I actually had). Worth a visit.
