A large traditional pub which nicely complements Northern Lights over the road. In COVID times this one was a bit of a puzzle - two big separated rooms with a hyperactive (but diligent) young man ascertaining the reason for your visit and seating you accordingly. Enter to a lively L shaped main bar and to the left is a quieter side room (where we ended-up) showing the sports over a number of screens - quietly. This room has a traditional feel (and a number of features are original); bottle green banquettes, wooden dark varnish fittings, little snug to the right. GBG-listed but the cask is bizarrely hidden round the back in the Oak Lounge and seemingly unadvertised elsewhere, I had to go and ask matey-boy how to get hold of it. There were two on, Marstons Pedigree (flat – end of barrel, 2) and the local Knockout Uppercut which was a much better slurp (3.5). In addition we also tried the Famrageddon Session IPA on keg, which was pretty good. The strange ale situation aside, this is a nice place and is worth the visit – just remember to ask loud and proud when you come in that you want the cask! I get the feeling that because of COVID restrictions I missed quite a bit of the detail elsewhere, they weren’t mad keen on people moving about.
