Set back from the road down a courtyard, this is pleasant GK foody pub over two rooms. The front is rustic in character as befits the advanced age of the building; the rear is a more modern extension with a fetching mural of the Welsh Dragon bothering the local castle. Star of the show is the rear garden with views of said castle over the moat, sadly covered in Ye Olde Medieval Scaffoldinge on my visit. Two cask on, a house beer and a competent half of GK IPA (NBSS 3). Perhaps the dragon should have been employed in the gents, as the air freshener was fighting a losing battle. If you’re in town and can bag a seat in the garden, then I’d say this one is worth doing.

A splendidly ancient building, tucked away in a side turning, which has been quite well converted into a pub, with a nice old stone part at the front and a curious twin-towered extension round the back with garden behind. Despite an overwhelming emphasis on food with menus and suchlike in all directions, there was nobody eating on a Monday evening, but it was still a nice place for a pint or two. Sadly only GK IPA on hand, with something else on pump not available, so not much choice. Get some good beers in and it could be an excellent pub.
